9. Boeing CH-47 Chinook – USA

Production company: Boeing (Vertol) Main Users: Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, Indian Air Force, Royal Air Force, and United States Army Project cost: $265 million* On September 21, 1961, the Boeing CH-47 Chinook had its maiden flight. The company Vertol, which would subsequently join Boeing, started working on the designs for this transport helicopter in the late 1950s as they were developing a novel kind of tandem-rotor helicopter. The CH-37 Mojave, created by Sikorsky, was to be replaced by the Chinook.
