Onycholysis refers to separation of nail from its bed. Triggers include chemicals, medications, thyroid issues, psoriasis, fungus, trauma, or certain antibiotics. It starts at the free edge and advances inward, turning the area white or opaque where air collects. Repeated soaking and aggressive manicures worsen it. Management centers on dryness, cleanliness, avoiding repeated stress, and letting the nail grow out. When systemic disease like thyroid dysfunction is involved, treating that cause prevents return.
